Across nearly 13,000 matches studied—covering eight full football seasons from 2017/2018 to 2024/2025—and focusing on the top 50 teams from the five major European leagues in both domestic competitions and European cups, the most frequent scoreline in football is 2–1 (regardless of whether it is in favor of the home or away team), accounting for 15.6 % of matches.

The second most frequent scoreline is 1–0 (15.4% of cases), followed by 2–0 (12.3% of cases), 1–1 (10.9% of cases), 3–1 (7.5% of cases), 3–0 (6.8% of cases), 0–0 (5.9% of cases), 2–2 (5.3% of cases), 3-2 (5% of cases), 4–0 (3.3% of cases) and 4-1 (3.2% of cases). These 11 scorelines account for a total of 91.2% of matches, while all other scorelines represent the remaining 8.8%.

A total of 23.3% of matches end in a draw: 0–0 (5.9%), 1–1 (11%), 2–2 (5.3%), 3–3 (1.1%), and 4–4 (0.2%).

76.7% of matches end with a winner between the two teams. In 51.8% of cases, the winning team keeps a clean sheet, while in 48.2% of cases, the winning team concedes at least one goal.

Across these 13,000 matches, the average number of goals per match is 2.9.
